Review of The Ward (2010) by Jt K — 03 Nov 2011
Not as bad as the lack of theatrical backing might lead one to believe. However, while the film is more then technically competent, it is missing any of Carpenter's signature style - both visually or via any subtext.
The film has an interesting set-up and a decent conclusion, but most of the middle can be a bit of a slog, as most of the characters are ciphers with nothing for the viewer to respond to (there is a obvious reason of course). Of the cast Heard proves the most amiable and holds the lead really quite well.
It's not a complete hack job, but Carpenter just doesn't seem to have his heart in this one.
