Review of The Ward (2010) by Tom B — 24 Feb 2012
A poor, simple thriller without the thrills.
Amber Heard stars in this psychological based thriller (not horror) about a girl sectioned to a mental hospital (ward) trying to uncover her forgotten past. Whilst in there she suffers ghostly and disturbing visions, being haunted by a past patient's zombie/ghost. The film then uncovers twists of who is who, based around multiple personality disorders, driving towards a confusing and complex, abrupt ending.
The film is lightly set in the 1960's, with some good performances and general direction, from horror legend John Carpenter (last film 2001!). I found it slightly dull, unimaginative and lacking the expected horror and shock elements. It is for this a lighter drama, rather than spooky thriller it threatens to become and so leaves you confused and disappointed rather than entertained or in praise.
