Review of The Ward (2010) by Luc L — 09 Aug 2012
One of Carpenter's lesser known movies. The story is familiar as well. But a pretty good cast like Amber Heard (All the Boys Loves Mandy Lane), Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies "2010"), Jared Harris (Resident Evil:Apocalyspe) and a scene stealer Mamie Gummer (Her mother is Meryl Streep) makes it worth watching.
Notable for three things, one is Carpenter not doing the music score, which he does for most of his movies. Second is, Carpenter shot this in Super 35 instead of Panavision. Because he couldn't afford to shot in Panavision! Third thing is in some ways this is the most unlikely Carpenter movie. It has very little of his style.
Carpenter nearly succeed trying something completely different to his visual style. Only the third act, like some of his better movies disappoints. In some odd way, the last shot of the movie reminds me of "Prince of Darkness". Another Carpenter cult classic.
