Review of The War Zone (1999) by Brandon V — 07 Nov 2008
Is it brilliant? Yes. But despite my perfect rating (which I don't give out lightly, I'm a lot more partial to 4 stars), I would not recommend seeing this movie. I'm not even sure if I want to see it again, but it earns a quiet place in my favorites.
There is simply no other way to tell a story like this than the way in which Roth seems to have chosen to - pick a top-notch cast, give them improvisational rights with the dialog, and then pick a quiet corner of the set on which to place your camera.
It simply HAS to be the best movie about incest ever made, even though I've only seen one other movie which dealt with the subject this frankly ("The Cement Garden").
