Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by Ah J — 05 Aug 2008
Given the technological limitations of that period, this movie probably did justice to the book with the way it showcased its aliens and the tripods (they looked more like flying saucers than actual tripods rather).
The acting wasn't too effective though, the invasion was taken as seriously as it could have been and the movie had quite a 'campy' feel to it. Regardless I'd say it probably employed cutting-edge technology for its time and that in itself is an achievement.
And please lets dispense with the needless comparisons people ALWAYS make with the 2005 versions! Both r very different films. This one was more sci-fi oriented and had an effective backstory for the aliens (Martians).
The 2005 version is told through the eyes of one man, we know only what he sees and knows, we r supposed to feel the very same fear and panic he does and we r supposed to be left with plenty of open-ended questions.
(When u r trying to save yr little brats' asses in desperation from mega-mech-monsters, the last thing u care abt is if they came from Mars or Venus or y the fuck the machines were buried underground in the first place).
The two interpretations of the novel stand out in their own right.
