Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by Victoria F — 17 Oct 2008
Before there was Star Wars, there was The War of the Worlds. H.G. Wells' classic novel about a Martian invasion is brought to life in vivid detail. In the 1950s, Orson Welles' radio broadcast about a Martian invasion shocked most of the nation listening to it.
This movie is the visual example. It revolutionized special effects, and won several awards for it. At first viewing, this movie is generally quite creepy. From first glance, the effects look generally cheesy, but remember this was in 1953.
These effects were stunning for this time period, and are still quite imaginative. I guarantee you will not forget the echoey "pinging" sound of the heat ray from the first time you hear it.
The acting is very 50s, but fits the movie perfectly for this type of plot. The ending is excellent, concurrent with H.G. Wells' ending. If you're into sci-fi, you need to see this. This is a classic piece of sci-fi work that is timeless.
