Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by Ashley C — 15 Nov 2008
I loved this movie to death when I first saw it at the age of seven or eight. When I watched it again in my late teens or early 20s, all I could see was the overacting and general cheesiness, not to mention one of the most anticlimactic deus ex machina endings in the whole of cinema.
Nowadays I can appreciate it for the effect it had on subsequent genre films, marvel that the effects still actually look pretty good, and just kind of ignore the stilted dialogue and religious overtones.
A fun flick that brings back good memories of Sunday afternoon movies on the local UHF stations.
