Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by James S — 09 Jan 2010
As stated before, the real heartbeat of a science fiction tale is the effects that whatever is happening has on the people around the action. This film attempts to address this issue. As the world goes through what it goes through, much time is spent on how the invasion not only effects the lead characters, but humanity as well.
True, at times the special effects are not good even by 1953 standards, but if the tale is told well enough, that does not matter. In this case, it really does not matter. A little fast, but a very good effort.
It is easy to see why this telling of the War of the Worlds is the considered the best of the bunch (including Independence Day, but maybe excluding Mars Attacks!).
