Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by Tray D — 03 Sep 2010
OK. I know this is a older movie which has lousy effects compared to today, but this is a movie made over 57 years ago. They did they best the could for that era.
I remember watching this movie for the first time on a Sunday afternoon on one of the local channels (before cable and big screen tv). The picture was sort of fuzzy and the tv was black and white.
I remember vividly the moment when all the people started to get disintegrated by the ray beams and some times the people would bump in to each other and ignite each other. I was so terrified that I ran up to the TV and turned it off, while every one else was watching it.
My entire family got upset and yelled at me, but I ran back to my mom and was frightened. I didn't watch the movie again for another ten years.
This movie is by far a better movie that the crap pushed out with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. I like Spielberg, but this movie is more intense. It doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles, but it more grounded to our fears and imagination.
A must for all collectors of sci-fi and is in my collection. A perfect movie to watch on a weekend, late at night with friends.
