Review of The War of the Roses (1989) by Stephen M — 28 Mar 2008
Somewhere down the line, people forgot about the black comedy. I don't know where they went to but I miss them. Every now and then one comes along (fargo!!!!) and I cherish it.
This is one of those black comedies. It might be even blacker than others because there is almost an hour of happiness between the Roses before the darkness sets in. And when it does, it is sheer heaven.
Such dark, funhouse, camera angles! Great wicked musical scoring! Dry, acid tongued dialogue deliveries and stone cold facials make the audience feel every bit of the hatred.
I cannot praise, enough, this artwork or the actors in it, especially Marianne Sagebrecht who proves that she should have been a much bigger star here in America.
Truly one of the best black comedies, if not best movies, ever.
