Review of The Wanderers (1973) by Aaron W — 21 May 2009
The Warriors it ain't, but a fun, campy, non-pc, high-school gang flick it is. The Wanderers works not only as a coming of age film but also as darkly fantastical nostalgic ode to the 1960s and the various roads taken by baby boomers in that time period. It's the story of the titular gang which gets in a sort of race rumble with another gang after a high-school lesson about racial equality gone awry. Somewhere along the way, however, the rumble turns into a football game, but none of that matters all too much as the real fun here are the various characters and their subplots. The soundtrack's pretty bitchin too, though I figure I'm gonna have "The Wanderer" stuck in my head for a few days now; could be worse. Still, Linda Manz was definitely the highlight of the film.
