Review of The Walk (2015) by Cath O — 23 Oct 2015
Dramatisation of the events Oscar winning documentary Man On Wire told a few years back. On the plus side, the 3D tightrope walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre French acrobat Philip Petite did in 1970 is one of the best uses of 3D you will see.
On the debit side, Joseph Gordon Levitt's Clouseau like 'ow you say' Franglaise accent is distracting. Levitt is an actor I have always found irritatingly smug since his 3rd Rock from the Sun days, and Petite is undoubtedly an egotistical showman so perhaps that works in his favour here.
The walk itself is carried out like a heist, something Man on Wire portrayed perfectly well. Of course, actually seeing it on screen, and getting that sense of the height of those iconically tragic towers is the draw and director Robert Zemeckis knows a thing or two about digital effects - Roger Rabbit, Forest Gump, Contact - and does a good job.
Not as good as Man on Wire for me despite the effects.
