Review of The Walk (2015) by Aapo R — 07 Nov 2015
The Walk is based on a true story. It is the story of Phillippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a french wire walker who had a dream to place a wire between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in the 1970s. The movie details early moments in Petit's life, the planning and gathering of people to help him accomplish his goal and a heist style final act to get in the Towers and get Petit to the top.
Things I Liked:
The Spectacle. This movie is one that is well worth the extra money to see in IMAX. I was blown away. There were perspective shots and long shots that make you feel like you are standing 1000 ft in the air. I was getting the feeling of vertigo sitting in the audience there it was so cool. If you can't do heights be warned this thing will make you nervous.
The Style. The movie is very stylized and done very interestingly with cool perspective shots, stylistic transitions, and very interesting color tricks. The movie is very cool to look at even when the characters are firmly on the ground. It's a very pretty film and keeps your eyes interested.
The Plot. The story of this movie is almost too absurd to believe. But when you realized that his actually happened your mind is blown by what is going on. This story has a really fun and interesting chain of events and really does a good job fleshing them out and keeping your interest.
Things I Didn't Like:
The Cast. The cast is fine, but also rather forgettable. Characters are introduced very late in the film and you never get time to really meet too many of them. The cast does a decent job with what they are given but there is only so much you can do with very limited time.
Overall:
Overall the movie is a great visual ride and has a really interesting story. The only major fault is that a vast majority of the cast doesn't get their characters fleshed out so we don't feel much for anyone besides Gordon-Levitt as Petit. The movie is incredibly interesting however and a must see for the power of visual storytelling.
