Review of The Wailing (2016) by Brian H — 04 Jun 2016
I was really looking forward to the wailing because I enjoyed his previous movies Na Hong Jin's done but I have to say, this one was slightly disappointing. Not to say that the film was bad by any means, it's definitely one of the most intense horror/thriller i've seen in recent years.
But without giving away too much, the film tries to put together too many different things at once and at times it's thought provoking while other times it's just confusing and nonsensical. What bothered me the most about the movie was the ending where I personally thought that all the analysis the audience has been doing the whole time is sort of ruined by the unambiguous conclusion.
Still, overall it's a great film and if you don't mind the gore and intensity, you will find the wailing to be a very worthwhile film. Plus, the horror market in Korean films is very scarce these days so this was a refreshing viewing.
