Review of The Wailing (2016) by Bill M — 15 Nov 2016
If you want a real hard horror or genre flicks these days you have to turn to the often pitilessly dark world of Korean horror, but with films like Oldboy and the soul savagingly harsh "I Saw The Devil" amongst the ranks, you need a pretty strong disposition to sit through one.
The Wailing is a new addition to the ever growing list of fucked up Korean nasties, a truly unique and bizarre movie that seesaws from Seven esc, graphicly blood spattered police procedural and then suddenly into out and out slapstick farce in a second and then straight deep into seriously dark and skin crawling supernatural stuff.
It's a bit overlong and a little maddening in it's unevenness quite a fair bit of the time, but overall the experience is really something, a bleak, powerful and intense as hell trip to hell. Be patient with it, let it soak in and reap the horrible rewards.
A haunting, strange and unpindownable film.
