Review of The Wages of Fear (1953) by Boon C — 11 Feb 2009
The first hour is kind of dull and slightly strange, possibly due to some poorly translated subtitles. And the last 5 minutes kind of ruined the film for me (to call it weird is an understatement). But everything else is superb.
Despite being a little bit contrived at times, the core hour-and-a-half of the 4 men driving the trucks is so damn good, full of likable, complex characters, great performances, and really intense scenes (especially Jo in the oil pool: that hits VERY close to home).
It's just a shame the rest of the film wasn't as good. To be honest, I would've liked the film more if it had ended before the final daytime sequence.
