Review of The Wackness (2008) by Paul V — 18 Feb 2009
Crazy-offbeat character study set in the early 90's, and I loved it. Laugh-out-loud funny, yet occasionally depressing, but at the same time an ode to friendship and the joys and pains of an 'ordinary' life.
Though without a doubt Peck's show, Kingsley has some outstanding moments as well. Thirlby, Jansen and the rest of the supporting actors round out a wisely chosen cast, and all fill out their roles well.
I really liked the sepia-tinted and sometimes unnaturally bright and deeply colored look of the film, as well, of course, as the music, which (though not exactly my favorite kind) was all too necessary and complimented every scene.
I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys the occasional off-kilter indie flick. One last note: loved the sped-up long tracking shot following Peck's outstretched middle finger throughout the city, which was totally unique and funny as hell.
