Review of The Vow (2012) by Francis O — 22 Aug 2012
Although based on the tragically true story by real-life couple Kim and Krickett Carpenter, the film is just like any other romantic offerings out there. Shamelessly formulaic and horribly generic to its genre, no doubt 'The Vow' did a helluva job in captivating lovebird's heart this Valentine's Day.
Despite the usual magical presence of romantic elements (beautiful fancy background settings, two charming leads, protagonists with well-established characteristics, a conflict that puts the lovebirds' relationship to stand the test of time, and of course, an awesome indie soundtrack.
), strip them away and the film will become as scarcely hollow as ever. Rachel McAdams did a notable performance as an amnesiac wife, while I'm still not convinced of Channing Tatum's stone-faced acting, in fact, I found it hard to sit through the movie with all his expressions of more or less the same facial pattern.
However, on the bright side, the chemistry between the leads won hands down. Apart from that, the movie could've been way better in many ways, such as upping the emotional element. Decent escapade from reality into the universal fantasy of love? Yes.
A great date movie? Definitely. But that's just about it.
