Review of The Vow (2012) by John M — 14 Jan 2013
You will think I'm a cold hearted bastard, but I really do hate this awful romance. A car accident leaves free spirited Paige (Rachel McAdams) with selective amnesia where she can't remember the last five years, including being married to Leo (Channing Tatum).
Leo spends the entire film trying to win her over as she goes back to the conservative ways she was before. Sam Neill and Jessica Lange, as her parents, seem thrilled about Paige's amnesia because they get their daughter back and can make her attend law school.
It seems difficult to root for Paige when she resists any effort to tap into her memories of Leo or stand up to her parents' wishes. Instead of making a good, sad romance like The Notebook, the filmmakers could have done more with this story than to suggest that conservative values are an aftereffect of brain damage.
True love may conquer all, but here nothing seems to work.
