Review of The Vow (2012) by Megan G — 07 Jan 2014
Like all movies "inspired by true events", you wonder how true to the story it is - and how much the film suffers as a result. This film has many flaws and the script is chief among them. The concept is strong - wife loses her memories of her marriage after a car accident and husband desperately tries to salvage their lost love - but the dialogue is weak and the execution is poor.
Much of the action simply makes no sense. Still, it has some heart to it and the actors do a fine job with the terrible material they are given. Jessica Lange's character is more nuanced than we are initially led to believe and the story is messier than some Hollywood types might have made it (yes, a good thing).
McAdams and Tatum don't have the best chemistry together, but in some ways that works given the subject matter. In the end, I hated many of the pieces but as a whole I can't say I regret watching it.
