Review of The Voices (2014) by Kathryn L — 08 May 2016
There is really only one truly great thing about this movie and it is Ryan Reynolds. He is the shining light that makes it so watchable. A far cry from his usual "smug douchebag" characters, Jerry is an awkward, shy, and sweet-natured young man who also happens to be a highly disturbed murderer; and Reynolds gives it his all.
Not only does he make Jerry a fully fleshed and likable character, but he manages to do the same for his cat and dog-both of whom he also voices. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot else that makes this film stand out.
The story itself is pretty standard, the other performances are rather bland (with the exception of Gemma Arterton), and the tonal shifts are rather jarring. This is ultimately a fine little horror comedy, but probably not one that you'll be clamoring to see again anytime soon.
