Review of The Visitation (2006) by Christopher M — 16 Jul 2008
I'm writing this review from the perspective of a huge fan of the book. Let me just say, I was a little skeptical going in, considering the grand scale over which Peretti's novel takes place. it spans all the way from the tiny town of Antioch to the vast megachurches of California and beyond.
The film takes a few more creative liberties than fans of the book might be comfortable with, but stick with and you'll see that the core story remains intact. Director Robby Henson has scaled the action down to where the action, both past and present takes place entirely in Antioch.
The film relies heavily on Edward Furlong's haunting performance as the chilling Justin Cantwell. On the topic of Justin, his origin has been reworked somewhat to make his mutual grudge with the hero Travis alot more personal.
This is the one departure from the book that I actually enjoyed. The final confrontation between Travis and Justin, and the horrifying revelation of Justin's tragic and macabre (moreso in the film than in the book, but still) past is every bit as chilling, even when you know it's coming.
We have the talented Edward Furlong to thank for that. Overall, a great movies, despite the liberties it takes with the source material.
