Review of The Virginity Hit (2010) by Shaun M — 09 Jan 2011
"Zack is going to do for Matt's virginity what Alfred Hitchcock did for birds.".
The Plot:
Whatâ(TM)s more important than losing your virginity? Apparently, for this group of high school kids, nothing! Four best friends are on a mission to get their untainted buddy laid while dodging the slings and arrows of teenage melodrama.
The Good:
Social Commentary:
The film quite accurately highlights contemporary social norms for teens â" what they value, what theyâ(TM)d sooner die than participate in, etc. Most notably, however, the internet (YouTube) phenomena and how, literally, millions of people can access a photo or cell-phone video in less than 24 hours.
Performances: Botko didnâ(TM)t recycle the usual suspects (aka, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse) for this project. In fact, this marks the third or fourth IMDB credit for the majority of the cast. This was most likely an attempt to introduce a bit of novelty to the obviously trite materialâ¦success! These kids were hysterical and worked very well together, each contributing unique comedic timing making for an eclectic little group of lunatics.
The Bad:
Overdone: The obvious downside to The Virginity Hit is the overused concept.
Theme(s)?: In an effort to include some form of âcoming of ageâ? while still fulfilling the comedic quota, the film got a little messy. Botko didnâ(TM)t quite commit whole heartedly to either theme, so the general tone of the film felt a little chaotic. Are we laughing or pitying? Not so clear.
Overall:
The film is mediocre. No glowing errors or strong points. Youâ(TM)ve got some new comedians, but other than that, there are a handful of movies within this genre that are far better.
