Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Kevin Val B — 05 Dec 2009
This movie is a melancholy, enigmatic, enthralling, introspective haze of a wet dream with an ending that reverberates even after the credits roll. It's about five sisters whose nymph-like innocence and shocking suicides enchant a group of adolescent boys until their adulthood.
The movie succeeds in depicting the boys' curiosity and attraction; revealing just enough details about the sisters to give them and their tragic fate that air of mystery. The cinematography is beautiful too, swathing the sisters in daylight hues to make them out as if walking on air, and emphasizing the repercussions of their suicides by diffusing the screen with an overcast grey.
