Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Damjan R — 22 Aug 2014
Beautifully haunting & darkly comedic, 'The Virgin Suicides' is the type of young adult film that dreams are made of. The highly stylized imagery amplifies the heightened lives of the characters, brought to life by the believably authentic work of all the actors in question.
Sofia Coppola's methodical direction and deliberate steady pacing work really well with her clean yet rich framing, lending the film its visual presence. The soundtrack excellently encapsulates the emotion running through the story and is used very elegantly throughout.
The story is somewhat mismanaged in the outset and while it really picks up in the middle and towards the end, its conclusion isn't as poignant as it perhaps could've been, despite being very hard hitting.
The direction is supported through excellent photography and smooth editing, giving Coppola's debut a sure-handedness often thought to be elusive for first timers. Recommended wholeheartedly.
