Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Eric H — 19 Dec 2014
This movie is not perfect- There are flawed trivial details, but I felt that over all it did not effect the quality of the movie. I appreciate that Sophia does not underestimate the intelligence of her "target audience" by needing to spell everything out to us as though we utterly lacked all imagination or the depths of our own experiences & understanding.
I find it strange that some of the reviews here give a low star rating because it was "dark, depressing, heavy subject matter" and that those people don't like that sort of story line. Did they read the title or the synopsis of the movie? (And here is where some people might hit the "not helpful button.
") but these are the same people that have movies like ACE VENTURA, or THE LAKE HOUSE on their 5 star list. It's obvious that this is Sophia's first film, but it was gorgeously wrought, and I adore her gossamer perspective.
All the descriptions fit; eery, haunting, mysterious, dreamy, etc. I give this 4 stars because of its unique feel , & it's not the same 'ol garbage that Hollywood keeps churning out to coddle the masses.
Also, AIR's soundtrack deserves it's own 5 star rating.
