The inspiration behind The Last House on the Left, this has far more power and horror.
Shorn of the chainsaw, and other sensationalism, the slower pace affords a far greater depth. Combine this with the Swedish dialogue and Nykvist's brooding chirascuro and you have a masterpiece of horror archetype.
