Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Andrew U — 21 Feb 2008
I am still stunned that Bergman shot this film in four weeks or so. Every shot by Sven Nykvist is perfectly framed, giving this simple yet extremely haunting fable. The attack on Karin is a vicious scene to watch, but then the horror is turned around on the viewer when Töre exacts his revenge on the bastards, forcing us to question the morality of violence and revenge.
Bergman never considered one of his major works, but is a simple and perfect film.
