Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Brandon F — 06 Oct 2008
An instant favorite to any educated film enthusiast. The film has a Shakespearian feel to it. Real drama that has been lost in modern filmmaking. Its symbolism and depth perfectly compliment its ideas and moral conflicts.
Bergman forces the viewer to hate the violence of the first half of the film, yet cause the viewer to wish violence in vengence in the second act. Then, in conclusion, he causes us to see the parallels between the two.
This film is truly one of Bergman's masterworks.
