Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Bob V — 04 Jan 2011
Ingmar Bergman's adaptation of an old Swedish ballad, which in turn inspired Wes Craven's gorefest "The Last House on the Left". An interesting case of how the same basic story (it really is very similar) can still become two completely different stories depending on how it is told.
Bergman forces the viewer to question innocence, guilt, right to revenge, faith, fate, a parent's love, sibling rivalry & - in its barest essence - Right or Wrong. Though not a masterpiece beyond compare like "The Seventh Seal" or "Wild Strawberries", "The Virgin Spring" is a wonderfully provocative work from one of the undisputed masters of Cinema.
