Review of The Village (2004) by Stuart J — 12 Jan 2012
The master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock knew that it was not enough to place a bomb in a parcel. The audience had to been implicitly engaged by knowing it was there for at least 20 minutes prior to its explosion.
Shymalan (Hitchcock's purported successor) seems to believe that depite the audience knowing that there's a man in a scary suit, we should be scared for the blind protagonist. Unfortunatley this was never going to work.
A shame, this film could have been so much better. this being said, some good scares early on and the traditional plot twist is clever enough, good soundtrack to.
