Review of The Village (2004) by Peter N — 11 Aug 2012
As the film gets going, director M. Night Shyamalan seems to get everything right with an effectively spooky atmosphere, clever characterization, and a terrifying presence lurking in the woods. Where it goes wrong is in its twist, which not only feels like a cop out, but it's revealed to the audience WAY too early.
Without giving too much away, it completely alters all the good things the film effectively established at the beginning. After the twist has been revealed, things that were initially scary are now ridiculous, and too much is shown.
It's still pretty good due to what it gets right, such as the aforementioned atmosphere along with solid performances and a haunting soundtrack, but its low points mark the beginning of the end of Shyamalan's ability to create truly groundbreaking thrillers.
