Review of The Village (2004) by Andrew T — 29 Aug 2012
People are all complaining about how this isn't that scary and the twist ending was not that twisty or something, and I'm like, did you miss the heart stopping wet-your-pants brilliance that is every single scene of this film.
Ex: Joaquin Phoenix as an amazing holy fool who blows every minute of screentime he has out of the water and he's only in half the movie. Bryce Dallas Howard being revelatory, breaking trends, stealing scenes, making legends real. William Hurt embodying the turmoil and well-intentioned steward spirit of a visionary elder generation. Adrian Brody inostentatiously changing the game. The creature design. The set design. The nuanced invented archaic vernacular. The script. The line about love. The line about color. The line about fear. The cinematography by grand jedi master Roger Deakins. The soundtrack to end all pastoral violin split your soul in half soundtracks. The Porch Scene.
I mean come on.
