Review of The Vikings (1958) by Martin B — 04 Jul 2010
Oh my oh my. If you haven't seen this movie. Add it to your list. This movie normally wouldn't strike me as something to write home about except for one particular moment when Richard Fleischer in an act of sheer genius decided to showcase a classic Viking game. The running of the oars. A long lost game from that the playful group would play often. It consisted of each man taking their turn and literally trying to run across the out stretched oars of the ship and jump back on again. No one. I repeat NO ONE has done this since the vikings! All the more impressive is that the scene was unrehearsed and out of all those stunt men who fell low and behold Kirk Douglas was the only one who actually made it.
[so basically watch it if you care more about historical accuracy like me].
