Review of The Vicious Kind (2009) by Tosaka T — 08 Aug 2012
Iâ(TM)m a sucker for Indie films and anything with âSundanceâ? on the poster.
Adam Scott is Caleb Sinclaire, who upon the opening scene is at a diner, smoking a cigarette, and just about to cry but pulls himself together as soon as his younger brother Peter (Alex Frost) comes around the corner. Caleb is very rude to the waitress as well as other women. At first this rude tone makes Caleb highly unlikable and a bit unbearable however we later learn this act is all because of a recent break up. Caleb has picked up his brother from college and the two are on their way to pick up Peterâ(TM)s new girlfriend Emma (Brittany Snow) to go to their fatherâ(TM)s home for a Thanksgiving weekend and when asked by Emma if he was going to join Peter, her, and their father for Thanksgiving he says no because his father and him are not exactly the best father-son duo.
After getting some back story on Emma, Caleb is convinced Emma is a two-faced whore and fears his innocent brother will get hurt. So he makes it his mission to make sure Emma doesnâ(TM)t hurt Peter but Caleb starts to become ridiculously attracted to Emma.
In this attraction Caleb is oddly weird to a creepy but sad level, he almost gets shot by his father, and he is just a sad silly fellow. Attached to all of his strange scenes with Emma, Caleb has not been on speaking terms with his father for almost a decade and Caleb eventually faces the feelings heâ(TM)s been trying to hide underneath a rug.

I was trying to understand Caleb for the longest time. He was such a dick at times and a really weird guy. He seemed very bipolar to me on the side that he was also experiencing a sort of insomnia as well, he probably didnâ(TM)t need to be diagnosed with anything but Caleb was definitely upset. The scenes where everything comes full circle; the scene where he stands up for a harassed woman and when he stands at the door step of his fatherâ(TM)s at the end make for excellent acting and an excellent story.
If you view the trailer in the link below this movie will seem hilarious. However that was just a compilation of some of the funniest scenes in the film. Itâ(TM)s more like laughter, what the fuck moment, another what the fuck moment, chuckle, raise eyebrow, another what the fuck moment, laughter, hate for Caleb, a series of what the fuck moments, more hatred, a lot of sympathy, and then a happy ending, mostly. :/.
Before watching Adam Scott in main roles like Caleb and like in Friends With Kids (check out my review for that, love that movie) I never thought he would be able to deliver such great performances. I was limited to Parks and Recreation and didnâ(TM)t think much of him, but he is easily one of my favorite actors.
Brittany Snow is so adorable! She looked like a mini Katy Perry in this film.
J.K. Simmons should not ever play a character with hair. Unless this is Spider-man, letâ(TM)s not give him a wig.
I guess my favorite moment in this movie was when Caleb got caught after spending a hot moment with Emma. It was probably one of the most dramatic moments ever.
Movie Grade: B.
