Review of The Verdict (1982) by Brian C — 25 Oct 2007
In 1982 many people expected Paul Newman to finally win the Best Actor Oscar for The Verdict. Although he lost to Ben Kingsley (for Gandhi) Newmanâ??s performance may be his best work in a long and distinguished career.
The film is a first-rate courtroom drama about an alcoholic, ambulance-chasing lawyer who finds redemption when he goes up against the church in a malpractice case. The filmâ??s other Oscar bridesmaids include director Sidney Lumet, James Mason (who plays the churchâ??s formidable lawyer) and David Mamet whose brilliant screenplay is studied in film schools all over the world.
