Review of The Verdict (1982) by Vanessa K — 03 Oct 2008
Imagine a drunk and depressed "Good Samaritan". Life and the ex wife have dumped on him. But he sees a young comatose woman and her tragic life shocks him to fight the super powerful doctor who goofed up her operation. (The David & Goliath theme works here also!).
Lots of great actors in this film. Favorite is one of my favorite film villains - James Mason, the suave defense lawyer called the "Prince of...DARKNESS".
Jack Warden is the rough edged but loyal brother's keeper to Newman...
Only mild criticism - Edward Binns has a too short role as the local bishop who will come to ask - did we fail this woman? Possibly this film seemed anti church because Binns' beginning conflict was not developed.
Julie Bovasso has a short, potent part as the experienced nurse who considers all the doctors as "whores".
Worth purchasing. A good discussion film on ethics for teens.
Newman shoulda done more films like this.
