Review of The Verdict (1982) by Darren R — 21 Jan 2009
I love a courtroom drama that gets me so riled up, I'm yelling at the screen for justice. Yet another example of how Sidney Lumet is definitely an actor's director. Of course, it helps that the actor he's directing is the one and only Paul Newman.
Newman really carries the movie with a realistic and compassionate performance, but tons of credit must really be given to David Mamet for constructing a beautifully-paced screenplay that relishes in drama without getting too far-fetched or ridiculous.
Like I said before, Lumet directs fantastically, and the supporting cast turns in really great performances to stay up there with Newman. Everything just comes together so nicely to make a really great courtroom drama that uses its words to illicit the emotions.
..quite well, I may add.
