Redemption wears many faces -- in "The Verdict," that of a seldom sober, washed up ambulance chaser. Lumet limns Mamet's rich screenplay for incandescent moments of self-realization by Newman's Frank Galvin, and the result is moving on a primal level.
Newman is beyond stellar, Mason is legal evil personified, Jack Warden is the moral center of the film, and Charlotte Rampling gives her best performance ever.
