Review of The Verdict (1982) by Anton B — 27 Nov 2009
This courtroom drama gives a scathing portrayal of social institutions, especially the law, but ultimately the film has faith in the individual's ability to act justly. Even so, none of the characters are wholly good or altogether likeable.
Paul Newman's washed-up, alcoholic lawyer misuses other characters to give himself his chance at redemption. Newman's signature blue eyes convey such weariness and desperation at times. The cold wintry streets and grand stone architecture of Boston emphasize the film's sombre tone.
