Review of The Verdict (1982) by Nate W — 12 Jul 2010
"The Verdict" is a slick courtroom drama and a heck of a good underdog story. Paul Newman gives a naturalistic, lived-in performance as an alcoholic ambulance-chasing lawyer with every possible odd stacked against him, and thanks to David Mamet's purposeful script and Sidney Lumet's unobtrusive direction (he makes little embellishment with music or flashy editing), we eagerly await to see how he'll overcome each obstacle.
Strong supporting turns come courtesy of Jack Warden and James Mason.
