Review of The Verdict (1982) by Dylan D — 06 Aug 2006
The Verdict is an emotionally driven and character based masterpiece that takes its place among the most celebrated courtroom dramas of all time. It wasn't so much about the important legal case, but more of a study on a regular man who is trying to redeem his entire life.
Paul Newman plays his part to perfection proving why he is one of the greatest actors. Sidney Lumet once again makes a great film dealing with more than just one main story. He was able to make me appreciate and care for Newman's character even though some of his decisions on life were questionable.
The courtroom sequence was intense and crafted to perfection. Newman's speech was inspiring and heartwrenching at the same time. He was able to portray a man who was on the verge of a breakdown but his success inevitably made him a more free and happier man.
The Verdict has nearly become forgotten in all the shuffles of courtroom dramas but will hopefully be rediscovered as one of the most emotionally eventful dramas of all time.
