Review of The Valet (2006) by Jacqueline X — 24 Jun 2007
François Pignon is back and this time, Francis Veber is behind the camera, and not in front of it (hélas -- he would've nailed the part of the rich "con").
I can't believe the reviews I've read below so far. Either my standards of guffaw-producing French bedroom farces are too high, or theirs are too low.
This was awful.
A paper-thin premise of a billionaire two-timing his wife (a piteous, but agilely bilingual Kristin Scott Thomas) with a "Top Model". Whomever he chooses, it'll end up costing him many Euros and his social position.
Gad Elmaleh, who was "sympa" in the decent romantic comedy, Hors de Prix ("Priceless", not yet released in the US), plays Pignon who this time isn't a taxman, but a lowly valet attendant.
No one can understand how he landed Top Model Alice Taglioni as a girlfriend, but that's part of the bigshot's plan to smokescreen his affairs from his wife.
Not even the usually reliable Daniel Auteuil can save this mess from mediocrity.
Like the valet attendant, it's simply out of its league.
