Review of The Valet (2006) by Ryan L — 04 Feb 2008
Light and frothy and lacking in some substance, but made up for by the winning chemistry and charisma of the main actors, notably Daniel Auteil (who is worth seeing in absolutely anything), Gad Elmaleh, and especially Alice Taglioni, who owns the movie.
The story doesn't really flesh out much of the characters and the relationships, in particular WHY Pignon loves Emilie or WHY Elena loves Levasseur and the plot proceeds quite quickly forwards without much interesting conflict. There are moments when it seems as if there will be some tension looming (Emilie v Elena or Levasseur v Pignon), but it never really escalates, which makes the whole film just rather Nice. It's an easy watch and glides quickly and doesn't really resonate or touch any emotional core, but it is enjoyable.
Alice Taglioni is wonderful, reminiscent of mid 80s Christie Brinkley; with her approachable beauty, she exudes warmth and makes you just fall in love with her (and you wonder how Pignon wouldn't!).
Good movie. Worth watching, but very light fare.
