Review of The Usual Suspects (1995) by John H — 04 Jul 2013
It's really hard to review this movie objectively, and that's because of that twist; it cancels out so much of the preceding movie that I was tempted to treat it as storytelling deconstruction.
Yes, its phantom of a mastermind intensifies the standard noir atmosphere of doom, and the character actors are a delight to watch as their crooks navigate the maze laid on top of them. But still, that bold but misconceived ending renders almost all of THE USUAL SUSPECTS moot.
The greatest trick the devil pulled may have been convincing the world he didn't exist, but that's better for a devil than it is for a moviegoer.
