Review of The Usual Suspects (1995) by Josh K — 15 Aug 2013
A perfect cast wonderfully moves this film along until an unexpected twist at the end terrifically throws us off guard while perfectly ending the film. Bryan Singer brings perfect direction to a film that focuses on five criminals who are arrested after a heist and put through a lineup.
The five unlikely criminals are than forced to work together after being contacted by a lawyer who works for Keyser Soze, who wants them to rob a boat of cocaine. Many of the actors in the film are wonderful, primarily Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey and Chas Palminteri.
The whole film is recounted through flashbacks while Spacey's character, a handicapped criminal gives information to Palminteri's detective about the events that lead up to the incident surrounding the boat.
John Ottman's score is brilliant and Christopher McQuarrie's screenplay is wonderful and surprising, delivering several unexpected twists. The best part of the film is the ending, which will probably be talked about over and over again after people have seen the film.
Absolutely brilliant.
