Review of The Usual Suspects (1995) by Scott M — 11 Dec 2012
Perhaps the defining crime thriller of the 1990s, not to mention the best, The Usual Suspects is American crime thriller at its very best, bolstered by a twist ending that ultimately places itself as defining the phrase 'twist ending'.
A pitch-perfect script, an unpredictable series of scenarios, a visually brilliant direction courtesy of Bryan Singer and a flawless cast ranging from Kevin Spacey as the infamous Verbal Kint, Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Pollak and the superbly-cast Chazz Palminteri are just a small amount of the highlights of this timeless masterpiece of American cinema that serves as a benchmark for aiming to create a legacy upon wannabe filmmakers eager to make the next big thriller.
The sort of film that had better not get remade for its untouchable stance as one that will never be bettered by anyone, this is the sort of film that people can look up to and say this is the film that makes us want to watch films again.
You could watch this film fifty times and be enthralled by its flawless storyline and pitch-perfect casting, writing, directorial and editorial decisions.
