Review of The Upside of Anger (2005) by Jim M — 08 Jun 2007
On my 2005 top 10 list.
Joan Allen is perfect as the bitter, nearly-psychotic wife whose husband has apparently left her for another woman. The movie starts with a funeral and then proceeds to flashback and fill in the past, up to that moment.
Terry (Allen) has had the rug yanked from under her life and is not handling it well. And she's a control freak who's lost control. Denny (Costner) the neighbor arrives and enters her life and helps her heal. All the while, you know someone's going to die; there's a funeral coming after all. So there's this shadow hanging over it all. It's a dark comedy but a good one as well as a good movie overall.
The writer/director appears as Shemp. The soup scene with Shemp is just flat-out out-loud funny. That, alone, made the movie worth the price of admission.
