Review of The Untouchables (1987) by Rupert P — 22 Aug 2013
As a huge fan of the mob/gangster genre, I can't help but say that I was dissapointed with The Untouchables. With a great cast and a cool premise, the film should have been much better. Unfortunately, over the top performances (Robert De Niro) and cheesy dialouge ruin what could have been a great addition to the genre.
The movie is undoubtedly entertaining but not too much else. Brian De Palma isn't exactly a great director, but he manages to make a pretty enjoyable film. What could have been terrific ends up being average with 2 good performances from Sean Connery and Andy Garcia.
Other than that, I never understood the hype towards this film. Sure some action scenes were cool, however The Untouchables is a film that is built on clichà (C)s and relies solely on entertainment to make up for it.
If your looking for a great gangster flick, check out The Godfather Trilogy and/or Goodfellas. The Untouchables isn't the best in the genre, but nonetheless enjoyable for what it is.
