Review of The Unsuspected (1947) by Sabrina I — 26 Jun 2010
This film is more exercise than anything else, but director Michael Curtiz shows his skill at creating visual flair to rank alongside many of the great stylists who forever fill our film noir imagination. Claude Rains is utterly convincing as the wealthy radio show host up to no good. Even if the plot is a little more than creaky, Curtiz's visual polish makes up for it. In the noir universe, style is almost always more important than a coherent story (remember "The Big Sleep"?) Something "The Unsuspected" proves clearly. *** Three Stars.
